MBBC shine at Beartown show

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD Boys Boxing Club were out in force at Beartown’s annual show at Congleton Town Hall.

Kicking off a busy night off boxing for MBBC was Lucas Earles taking on Dylan Maudsley from Barrow ABC.

This was a skills bout and a great start to the night. Earles has gone from strength to strength and dominated the contest.

Showing great boxing ability, Earles looked comfortable throughout and enjoyed every minute of the bout, a great learning curve for both boxers.

Next up, making his debut, was young Sam Coates also in a skills bout, against local lad Will Bours from Beartown ABC.

This was another crowd pleaser. Both kids were anxious and took their time to start, but as they both relaxed the shots started to flow. Both youngsters were having success with accurate shots on target, these two loving every minute of their contest and both looked like they would be around for a while to come.

Scott Attward of MBBC was hoping to avenge a split decision from two weeks previous against his opponent, Tom Strong from Middleton Select, so went straight to work once the bell sounded, hoping to avoid the decision going to the judges again.

It got a little scrappy at times with Attward not using his boxing ability, instead going to war, something he had tried to work on this in the gym.

When the pair came close together neither were getting clean shots off, Strong the taller southpaw opponent was covering up a lot tighter than their previous contest but never the less Attward was throwing the more shots.

Attward should have picked his shots, worked the body and wait for openings – then back up to the head. But with such an aggressive mind set he over worked.

Again it was difficult contest to judge as it depended on where you sat as to what you saw. One judge gave it to Attward, one to Strong then the third judge scored the rounds two to strong one round to Attward – another split decision in favour of the Middleton lad, a great bout for the crowd and back in the gym for Attward.

Next headlining the show was 19-year-old Chris Bowes. His opponent was a strong 25 year old, Jorden Dix from Barrow ABC. This was a light heavyweight contest with both kids having had a few contests it was going to be storm burner of a bout.

Round one and Dix showed his strength, constantly throwing bomb after bomb in Bowes direction, he kept on the back foot covered up and weathered the storm.

Round two and Bowes started to find his feet as Dix pulled off the gas, straight solid shots were now catching Dix as Bowes started to wear him down,

Round three and this was where Bowes came into his own and it wasn’t long before the referee gave Dix an eight count as he was taking shot after shot without covering up as he tired. Bowes was relentless, showing his stamina and fitness. This was a well fought contest after he looked to have lost the first he then went on to win the second and third, Bowes the winner by unanimous decision and a great end to the night.

Also out last weekend, boxing on a Sunday day show, was the young Noel Straw up in Bolton against Shamil Islam from the Blackburn Cobras. This was taken at short notice to help the host club out. Islam was taller and set a really fast pace from the off as Straw covered up well. Islam was a slick fighter, using the ring, punching and moving and looking very good, a nice tasty boxer. Straw took the first round to understand his boxing style but after that he tracked him constantly, covering up tight then letting his shots go once he was in range – a really well fought contest from both kids considering their age at 11.

It was a pleasure to see these two get to grips with each other and the decision again a split one suggested it was a close contest. Islam had caught the eye of the judges and just edged the win, a fantastic bout and one that Straw could hold his head proudly in the air as both boxers recieved applause from the happy crowd.
