Luck of the Cup

- ADAM WASHBROOK

JOHN Askey fely his Macclesfield side were unlucky not to progress through to the second round of the FA Cup following defeat at Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

The Silkmen created chances and did have an effort ruled out for offside, but were knocked out of the competition at the first round stage, falling to a 1-0 defeat.

Askey said he thought his side had the edge over the League Two outfit, despite the scoreline.

“We missed chances and limited them to very few,” he said. “We can’t say we didn’t break them down because we did. We had the ball in the back of the net in the first half but we’ve given away a poor goal. But we went to Forest Green and made a good game of it. There was nothing in it apart from our own finishing. Looking back on the game, we had most of the chances.

“It’s happened in two or three games now and we need to start finishing. If we don’t we’re going to struggle, we can’t rely on clean sheets.

“I’m really pleased with how we’re playing though, and anyone who saw our performance will be impressed.”

Askey said he hoped some positives would come out of the loss and that the defeat might benefit their push for promotion from the National League.

“It’s fewer games for us, but it means less money coming into the club. We’re aware of that. But hopefully, with fewer games to negotiate, it will benefit us in the long run.”
