Boy, 9, saves mum after school lesson taught first aid

- RHIANNON MCDOWALL

ANINE-YEAR- OLD boy saved his mum’s life thanks to first aid training he received at school just weeks earlier.

Ewan Dingle flew into action when his mum, Emma, suffered a seizure at their home.

Luckily Ewan, who is a student at Ivy Bank School, knew exactly what to do thanks to the first aid training by Millie’s Trust - which had been provided after the school won a competition.

Emma, 32, who can only remember waking up in the hospital after the incident, says the first aid training enabled him to stay calm and put her in the recovery position while he called an ambulance.

Emma said: “He is my little hero. I dread to think what would have happened if he hadn’t have been there and stayed so calm. A week before he had done a first aid course in school and remembered what to do.”

Emma, who is originally from Bollington but now lives in Rood Hill in Congleton, says while Ewan has seen her have a seizure before, she had not had one in two years.

She said: “Ewan was on facetime with his dad when I had a seizure out of the blue. He heard a thud. Hung up on his dad and ran to help me. He didn’t panic.

“He called 999 and then put me in the recovery position, put a cushion under my head to make sure I didn’t hurt myself. He even locked the dog out of the way and left the door open for the paramedics.”

Emma, who used to work as a carer until her illness forced her to stop, added: “I’ve no recollection of it but when I was told what he had done I was so proud of him. He’s very mature for his age - he’s amazing.”

Ewan, who is currently learning to the play the bass guitar, has now been registered as a young carer to help his mum.

He said: “When it happened it was a bit scary at first but when I needed to call the ambulance, they helped me feel better. I was told to put her in the recovery position. Luckily I had learned that at school. I now feel that I know what to do if it happens again.”

Sarah Gill, deputy head teacher at Ivy Bank, said all year five pupils were given first aid training by Millie’s Trust.

She said: “Everyone is so proud of Ewan for remembering what he was taught and using these new skills to help save his mum’s life.

“We are delighted that the broad curriculum and life skills education provided by Ivy Bank had contributed to this amazing achievement for Ewan and such a positive outcome.

“We are incredibly proud of Ewan and will continue to support him and his mum.”
