Youngsters lose out

- ROB TRAFFORD

OLDHAM-BASED Avro maintained their perfect start to the season, as they clinically put Macclesfield Town’s Under 21 side to the sword with a 4-1 win at the Mary Dendy Playing Fields.

Macc looked to play the free flowing, intricate football which they are becoming renowned for, yet this was undoubtedly hampered by the rain sodden terrain which proved to be incredibly challenging.

Having seen a penalty appeal waved away, Dan Dolling avenged the decision as his brilliant fifteen yard header rattled the inside of the post before nestling in the back of the net to give Macc a 23rd minute lead.

The Silkmen’s advantage lasted just four minutes, however, as Matt Hadcroft restored parity with a simple tap in.

Two minutes before the interval, Sean Scully rattled the crossbar with a powerful effort from 25 yards and on the stroke of half time Dolling’s cross along the six yard line agonisingly evaded Scully.

The visitors were to take the lead in the 53rd minute, however, when Elliott Hogan seized on a loose ball before firing home from close range.

Avro extended their lead on 74 minutes, when Oliver Froggatt brilliantly found Hogan unmarked at the back post and the striker made no mistake from close range.

With eight minutes left on the clock, substitute Kane Kelly majestically struck a twenty five yard thunderbolt which flew into the net to give the visitors a three goal cushion.

Speaking after the game, manager Martyn Irvine stated: “Yet again we dominated proceedings, but just couldn’t convert that dominance into goals.

“These young lads play football the correct way, with a great attitude and are a credit to the club.”
