Ty rescues point with late leveller

- VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE

MACCLESFIELD Town recorded their second successive draw thanks to a dramatic injury time equaliser.

The Silkmen trailed with just seconds to go, but substitute Tyrone Marsh hit a late goal to salvage the home side a share of the spoils.

It was the second time on the night that Macc had come from behidn to draw level.

The home side had the first real chance of the game when Elliott Durrell cut inside from the right-hand side and fired a shot from the edge of the area, only for the ball to go just wide.

Ryan Lloyd was next to challenge the stubborn Tranmere defence. He cut in from the left and shot goalwards but his effort was blocked away with Scott Burgess firing the rebound well over.

Despite the majority of the early period being dominated by Macclesfield attacks, it was the visitors who got the first goal.

Larnell Cole put the finishing touch on a quick breakaway to give Tranmere the lead.

Macclesfield continued to enjoy the best of the possession in the first half but were always wary of the threat of the counter attack from Tranmere.

Five minutes before half time Macclesfield got their reward for the continued pressure. George Pilkington got on the end of a well-placed free kick, and as he turned to shoot he was brought down in the box.

Danny Whitaker stepped up to take the penalty but his effort was saved. Luckily for the Silkmen, Scott Wilson was waiting eagerly and finished the rebound to level the game.

The parity didn’t last long though and two minutes later the Silkmen found themselves behind again. Rovers once again caught Macc on the counter attack, this time from a corner, with Cook providing the crucial finish past Shwan Jalal.

Macclesfield dominated most of the second half but struggled to break Tranmere down. Scott Burgess had the chance to equalise but his shot from inside the area was blocked out for a corner.

Just as the home fans had begun to think it wasn’t going to be their day, Macc found the equaliser.

On as a substitute, Marsh levelled the game with just seconds to go to earn Macclesfield a well deserved point.

Manager John Askey spoke after the game, believing that his side had done more than enough to win the match after dominating possession, but felt his side were let down by poor defending on the goals.

“I was disappointed with the goals that we gave away, I thought we played well and controlled the game,” he said. “They hit us on the break twice and it’s just disappointing we haven’t got the win. Tonight showed again that we’ve got some really good players, and if they believe in themselves then we will do alright.”
