Gun amnesty sees 29 weapons handed in

-

TWENTY nine guns were handed in Macclesfield during a gun amnesty – the highest number in Cheshire.

More than 100 guns have been handed into the police across the county as part of a sweeping weapons ‘surrender’.

Dozens of rifles, shotguns, pistols and a number of rounds of ammunition, were handed into Cheshire Police during the two week scheme.

Officers gave residents across the county the chance to hand in their firearms, legal or not, without fear of prosecution.

Macclesfield registered the highest number of firearms, with 29 handed in and 104 given up across the whole of Cheshire.

Officers were clear to point out however, that the surrender does not give an amnesty for the life of the weapon.

According to police, all the weapons will be examined to ensure that they have not been used in any criminal offences, before being deactivated and destroyed.

A previous amnesty was held earlier this year, in April, during which the same number of weapons - 29 - were handed into police.

Inspector David Price said: “Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to everyone.who had the confidence to come forward and surrender items during this campaign. Thanks to their support we can ensure that these weapons never get into the wrong hands.”
