We’re lucky to have world-leading Jodrell observatory on our doorsteps
Talking Politics David Rutley
WE are fortunate to have the iconic Jodrell Bank site so close to Macclesfield. With its world-famous Lovell Telescope, it plays a vital role in underpinning Cheshire’s position as a hub for science and innovation, and also boosts the visitor economy.
I’m delighted that, in his Autumn Budget, the Chancellor, Philip Hammond, announced that Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre will receive £4 million, to enable it to complete its new, £20.5 million ‘First Light’ heritage gallery project. This will further promote the historicallysignificant scientific work undertaken by this world-leading Cheshire facility and help inspire the next generation of scientists.
Alongside Professor Teresa Anderson, Director of Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, I have been actively campaigning for funding for the First Light project and I am pleased the Chancellor listened and responded positively to the campaign. I met with the Chancellor earlier this year, to seek Treasury assistance for this initiative, and have made regular representations to Treasury officials since then.
It will be important to see this great project come to fruition.
Science and innovation continue to play a key role in our local economy. I welcome the Budget’s confirmation of the Government’s ongoing commitment to further investment in science and technology, with overall investment set to increase to £12.5 billion each year by 2021-22. There is also greater focus on promoting maths, science and technology in schools, to encourage more young people into science and engineering professions.
These positive steps will help reinforce the importance of the Cheshire Science Corridor, including AstraZeneca’s Macclesfield site: the largest pharmaceutical facility in the UK.
By supporting worldleading sites like Jodrell Bank, and the vital research and development undertaken across Cheshire East, we can help create jobs and drive investment in our local economy. I will continue to actively support these vital aims going forward.
