Askey’s player search goes on

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town boss John Askey insists he is still in the market for new players but won’t sign a player just for the sake of it.

The Silkmen boss has been keen to add to his squad for quite a while, but is adamant that it has to be the right fit for the club.

“We’re still trying, we’re searching for the right players to bring in, but as you can see from other clubs there’s not many people making moves in the transfer market,” he told the club’s official website.

“Those who are available aren’t perhaps what we’re looking for, and there’s no point bringing someone in just for the sake of it. We can’t afford to be doing that with the circumstances at the football club.

“To get the type of player we need doesn’t come around very often, but we’ll keep looking. We’ve got to be patient – it was the same in the summer.

“If we’d signed early we wouldn’t have got the right players and it would’ve been at the wrong prices. I waited and it paid off, luckily. It’s all I can do is be patient.

“Hopefully the players can keep performing on the pitch, because they’ve done brilliantly so far. There’s not a lot wrong, but we’re always looking to improve.”

One positive for Macclesfield is that they haven’t suffered many injuries this season, and Askey admits that has been a big influence in how the team has performed during the campaign so far.

“We’ve been fortunate with injuries so far. If we hadn’t have been so fortunate we might have been in trouble at this stage,” he said.

“We haven’t picked up as many wins as I’d have liked lately, but we’re still in a good position and everybody is in good spirits.”
