Attward edged out in Dome bout
MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club were back in action recently as they competed on a show that was taking place at the Devonshire Dome in Buxton.
They only received 24 hours’ notice for the fight due to a pull out, with Scott Attward stepping in to go against Joe Russell.
Attward was giving weight away in the fight to the very capable boxer Russell, but MBBC wanted to help out the show and decided to take the bout.
It was going to be a tough one and as they came together to touch gloves it was all action from the off.
Russell had a good following as the crowd got behind him on his home show but Attward was moving well and boxing well in this first round, drawing shots then throwing the counters which were bang on target in a great first round.
In round two Russell was being drawn in and caught Attward early in the round, and this resulted in tempers rising and as such this was a toe for toe round as both threw shot after shot, with their skills going out the window, leading to a stern telling off from the corner.
Round three saw Attward try his best to keep cool, which was easier said than done as both lads tired, but with the home crowd behind him Russell was spurred on, finishing the round well.
This was a close contest and wasn’t going to be easy to judge as Attward’s unorthodox style is not to every judge’s taste.
The verdict was that Attward lost on a split decision, but both boxers were credited after giving it their all.
The MBBC coaches were again quick to tell Attward that if he performed the same way he does in the first round throughout a fight then the judges would have no option but to give him the win.
The MBBC coaches also expressed the belief that any boxer who thinks an hour a week three times a week is sufficient to compete in this game is kidding themselves and wasting their talent.
