New shop for volunteers at furniture reuse charity
VOLUNTEERS from a furniture recycling charity have celebrated opening their new shop.
Cheshire Streetwise has opened its new shop on Mill Street, where volunteers take in unwanted furniture, tidy it up and sell it on to families who need it.
Macclesfield MP David Rutley cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony alongside volunteers and staff, as well as founders Maggie and Iain Falconer Drew-Taylor and Macclesfield mayor Beverley Dooley.
The shop is the second run by the organisation, which was set up to help homeless people in Macclesfield, with the other on Gilchrist Avenue on the Weston.
Founder Maggie said: “We have opened on Mill Street as we have been doing so well for the community. We have helped more than 188 families and individuals over the last few months and saved around a tonne of furniture going into landfill each month. We would love people to pop in for a free cup of tea or coffee, and to browse the furniture and household goods. We operate a food bank and provide furniture and other items free to the people in our own community who are in need. As the winter approaches, we are always grateful for donations of food, furniture and warm clothing to help those who are homeless or in dire circumstances. We are doing a Christmas Day meal at Elim Church and are always happy to receive donations.”
MP David Rutley has praised the charity, adding: “Cheshire Streetwise undertakes invaluable work, which the furniture store is just one part of. I have seen the difference it makes and am pleased to see it going from strength to strength.”
