MBBC night to remember in Liverpool

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD Boy’s Boxing Club made the trip to Liverpool recently to compete on a show held by Bootle ABC at the Fusion Nightclub.

First up was Lucas Earles who had been training regularly since the age off seven, and now at 11 he was ready to make the transition to a full bout after competing in skills bouts for the past year.

He was facing Elliot Welch from Croxteth ABC, who was also having his first contest.

The two boxers weren’t leaving anything to chance as they both put on a great performance and by the end of the second round, there was nothing between them so the coaches spurred Earles on and he turned it up a notch and proceeded to put it on Welch.

The referee had no option but to give Welch a standing eight count as Earles hit home with power and accuracy, leading to MBBC and Earles getting the win in bout one.

Next up was Noel Straw from MBBC against Harvey Dryhurst from Derry Mathews’ gym in Liverpool.

Both had similar records but Straw’s record doesn’t reflect his ability as off late he has been turning it in and on this night it was no exception.

He went to work from the off against Dryhurst, who was a good stand up technical boxer but he couldn’t cope with Straw’s constant pressure and mixing up shots to the body and head.

It was a great learning fight for Dryhurst but in the end was an excellent win for Straw, so MBBC had two wins from two.

Next up making his debut was Sam Coates, as he took on Joe Hughes from Croxteth ABC. Hughes was another classy boxer with nice skill against the rugged style off Hammond, so this was going to be interesting.

They touched gloves for round one, and before you knew it Hughes had walked on to a thunderous back hand from Hammond and from that point on Hughes didn’t want to be in there.

The coaches told Hammond to rein it in and box so he proceeded to boss Hughes throughout the contest, bringing home win number three of the evening.

MBBC were ecstatic by this time but the pressure was on Scott Attward to try and make it a 100 per cent record.

His opponent this evening was the same boxer he took on last year and lost a controversial split decision, so this time the advise was don’t leave up to the judges.

His opponent was Jack Ellison from the host club Bootle ABC, and as the bell went Attward was on him like a rash.

He had a different feel about him as he was confident and was enjoying himself, as he drew shots off Ellison and then proceeded to counter him every time with great success.

This was Attward at his best, using the ring and switch hitting, throwing from different angles and enjoying every minute.

In his last three contests he’d been scrappy and engaging in toe to toe battles but not on this occasion, as he had a flare about him and was reminiscent of the great Roy Jones Jnr, and although the crowd weren’t enjoying seeing their friend being schooled, those with a love of boxing were enjoying every minute and as the final bell rang it was win number four for the travelling club.

It’s unheard of but if you don’t leave to chance then you can’t get the wrong decision.

It was an excellent night with a winning team consisting of the four boxers and coaches John Watson, George Parish and Sean White.
