Askey hails squad’s ‘incredible achievement’

- SHELDAN KEAY

JOHN Askey says it’s an “incredible achievement” for his Macclesfield Town side to be challenging at the top of the National League table at this point in the season.

The Silkmen are currently in first position, two points clear of second placed Sutton United following Macc’s 4-1 win over Wrexham on Saturday.

Askey is over the moon with what his team have managed during the campaign so far, and hopes that they can keep it up over the coming weeks and months.

“To think where we are, it’s an incredible achievement really. I know the level of players we’ve got in the dressing room and they can all compete at this level, but it has been a terrific effort by everyone involved,” he told the club’s official website.

“It’s all about keeping it going now. Hopefully, we can have that little bit of luck and we don’t pick up injuries and suspensions along the way.”

After a difficult start to the summer when several key players left the club, Askey previously stated that he thought his team may have to battle against relegation this season, and he thinks that makes his side’s current great run even sweeter.

It’s a far cry from where we were earlier in the summer, miles away in fact,” he said.

“Everyone connected with the football club, the fans, staff, and players, I’m sure are all enjoying it. If we can’t enjoy it now then we never will. Let’s go all the way.”
