Bob sets out his stall to bring in the big books...

-

BOB Jenner will be manning his book stall as usual when the bustling Treacle Market comes to town again on Sunday (January 28).

The amateur book collector and historian is a seasoned stallholder, having been involved in the award-winning monthly markets virtually since they began in 2011.

Every penny he receives for second-hand books is donated to East Cheshire Hospice, raising close to £16,000 for the charity.

Last year was a record year, with book sales generating £3,385, reflecting the flourishing demand for hard-backed books covering a range of topics.

Typically, he will collect between £250 and £300 on a Sunday.

Bob, from Macclesfield, said: “It started with me clearing the decks of a few old books which raised a few bob but it’s now grown into something much more valuable.

“We constantly push the message that there are no overheads and any money taken goes directly to the hospice.

“Anyone who wants to donate books can drop them off at the market, which is open from 10am until 3pm on the last Sunday of the month.”

Coaches arrive from as far away as Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and North Wales, reflecting the popularity of the 160 stalls which cover the pedestrian area of the town centre.

The East Cheshire Hospice book stall is based outside PR Jones Jewellers, a prime pitch kindly provided by co-owner Michael Jones from the outset.

Bob said: “Michael has been extremely generous, including letting us store books and equipment at his shop.

“I’d also like to thank our other volunteers who include Tom and Paul Morrissey, Mitch Moores, Nick Munsch and Cris Henshaw.

“In my opinion the market is a fantastic institution, similar in many ways, particularly the atmosphere, to French rural markets.

“It’s been a real boost to the town’s economy.”
