Youth summit lets youngsters lead with ideas

- DOMINIC SMITHERS

STUDENTS will get their chance to be in charge at this year’s Town Council Youth Summit.

Teenagers and young adults from Macclesfield will be able to have their say and offer ideas on ways they think the town could be improved.

Last year, 30 young people met to share ideas, which resulted in Macclesfield Pride, which is to be launched this year.

Due to be held in July, Macclesfield Pride will be organised by Utopia, which supports local LGBT young people aged 15-19.

Meetings are set to be held in the next few weeks which will see concrete plans for the inaugural event.

Helena Gowler, community engagement officer for Macclesfield Town Council said: “Last year’s event was a real success, with several fantastic projects being developed as a result of the get-together.

“We hope that by holding the event again, we can keep the momentum going of listening to young people and supporting them to work on projects which positively contribute to Macclesfield.”

A group from Maccles- field Academy also spoke at last year’s summit and have since introduced free Youth Street Sports for seven to 16 year olds.

After saying there were not enough activities for children outside school hours, the free sessions run at Jasmine Park MUGA, Banbury Close playing fields and Macclesfield Academy Astroturf, every week.

The council says the free sessions, run by qualified coaches, have been a suc- cess and will go on throughout the year.

The idea for the Youth Summit came from Councillor Neil Puttick.

In March 2017, councillor Adam Schofield and the town clerk, Pete Turner, visited Beech Hall, King’s School, Macclesfield Academy and Tytherington School to tell students all about the work the Town Council does.

The summit is free to attend and is open for people aged 16 to 21.
