Perfect play tribute to strong women of past
STRONG female leads will take to the stage for a timely production by MADS theatre.
The next play in Macclesfield Amateur Dramtatics Society’s 70th anniversary season is ‘Blue Stockings’, by Jessica Swale.
Set in 1896, it follows four female students at Girton College Cambridge as they fight for the right to become educated and to graduate, and is the perfect choice as this year marks 100 years since women won the right to vote.
Claire Richards, Imogen Kite, Amy Leech and Emily Redwood will take the lead roles as the Girlton Girls who, despite being as smart as their male peers, leave college with nothing but the stigma of being a ‘ blue stocking’ – an unnatural, educated woman.
The boys are played by Connell Costello, Andy Loxham, Ted Tomkins, George Reavey and Richard Chester.
Suzanne Copeland, from the group, said: “Tess Moffat and her fellow first years are determined to win the right to graduate. But little do they anticipate the hur- dles in their way: the distractions of love, the cruelty of the class divide or the strength of the opposition, who will do anything to stop them.
“The play follows them over one tumultuous academic year, in their fight to change the future of education.”
She added: “This play has a bit of a cast of thousands and we’ve got a bevvy of very talented youngsters so we’re very excited. Many of [the actors] are appearing on our stage for the first time – a wealth of new young talent awaits.”
Also among the staff are Gemma Wilson and Keith Oldham. The play is directed by award winning director Kayleigh Smith, assisted by Luke Oldham. It runs from Monday, February 26 – March 3.
