Blues get set for game of catch up
THE winter weather put paid to any rugby being played on Saturday by Macclesfield sides but at least it left us all with an opportunity to watch the Six Nations games on the box and there was some good rugby to watch – especially when Scotland met France in probably the best game of the weekend.
Controversy – as always – was round the corner, certainly in the England-Wales encounter.
Was it a try?? I thought so and I gather so did many others, but in the end it was a TMO who decided that England remain on course for a possible ‘Grand Slam’ come the end of the campaign. I wonder what Max Boyce would say?
Back to Macclesfield Rugby and not surprisingly with the current state of the main arena at Priory Park and the appalling weekend weather the local derby with Sale was postponed as were the other games to have been played so no rugby on the park.
This is the third ‘home’ encounter that has been postponed due to the conditions and leaves us now playing ‘catch up’ but thankfully there are ‘reserve’ dates in the calendar to fit these games in, so watch this space for details as to when these games can be played as, of course, no rugby at Priory Park on Saturdays means no income over the bar and catering which does not please our Treasurer!!
No other games in Two North were postponed on Saturday and the results meant Stourbridge kept up the chase in second spot with a 23-10 victory over Leicester Lions but Hinckley came unstuck just over the hill in Sheffield where they went down 14-8 but remain in third place with still a small three point gap between them and Sedgley Park who won 22-17 at Luctonians.
Away from Macc and with just over two months left in the campaign it is looking increasingly likely that joining us in Two North next season will be Preston Grasshoppers who sit well clear of Lymm & Harrogate in Three North alongside Birmingham & Solihull who lead the Midlands division having lost just one game so far with Peterborough Lions looking ‘play off’ candidates alongside our Cheshire neighbours Lymm.
At the ‘wrong’ end of Two North it is now Blaydon, Luctonians and Sheffield sitting as bottom three with a resurgent Wharfedale looking likely at this stage to survive having spent much of the season at the bottom and they had a convincing 43-5 victory over Huddersfield in last weekend’s Yorkshire ‘Derby’.
All will be revealed in the next few weeks but increasingly looking likely to make the drop from National One are Fylde who are now nine points adrift at the bottom with Albanians and Hull Ionians just above them in the same relegation fight.
I won’t mention that ‘other’ rugby game as my side had another night to forget over the weekend and nor will I mention what is happening ‘down under’ with the Cricket squad in the one dayers!!
This Saturday Macclesfield travel to the Midlands where South Leicester provide the opposition and for those travelling they play at the Welford Road Ground, Wigston Magna, Leicester LE18 1TE.
