Macc turn the corner

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey hopes his side have now turned a corner and are once again strong contenders to earn promotion after their 2-1 win over Guiseley on Saturday.

Rowan Liburd had given strugglers Guiseley the lead at half-time, but second half goals from Nathan Blissett and Tyrone Marsh earned Macclesfield all three points.

The victory meant that the Silkmen returned to the top of the National League table, and Askey says the win was exactly what was required after a poor run of form.

“We dominated the game from start to finish and was really pleased to get the three points. It was just what we needed,” he said.

“I was happy with how we played but I was disappointed with the goal that we gave away.

“There was not a great deal to say at half-time as the players were working hard and we were creating chances.

“Everyone knows what we’re aiming for at this time of the season so it was great that everyone stayed positive and relaxed and got us the win.”

Blissett got the equaliser for Macc just after the hour mark, and Askey praised the striker for getting on the scoresheet on his first start for the club.

“I was really happy for him. He made his first start and to get a goal can only give him confidence,” he said.

“He gives us an extra dimension that we haven’t had for years and hopefully he can keep playing like that.

“We have a talented squad full of good players and we’re looking strong at the moment.”

Askey also praised the Macclesfield supporters for their efforts in the game, believing that they played a big part in helping the Silkmen come out on top.

“The fans were magnificent. Even at 1-0 down they got behind us and it was important that everyone was supporting us,” he said. “They remained positive no matter what the score was and it helped to give the players a lift, as even when we were a goal behind they were singing and chanting.

“It not only has an effect on us but it has an effect on the opposition as well, as it creates a positive atmosphere for us to play in.

“They were tremendous in the game and obviously everyone wants the same thing so hopefully we can deliver what everyone wants and earn promotion.”
