Straw picks up worthy victory

- BOXING SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club have been in action recently as they competed on a Northside ABC show taking place in Audenshaw.

Northside are one of the well established clubs in the region with their boxers having lots of experience, so MMBC knew it would be a tough night.

First up in a skills bout was young boxer Yakub Wisniewski against Northside boxer Kayden Lawson. As the bell went they were allowed to go for it from the start and this suited Jakub much better as both kids gave a good account of themselves as they threw shots from the off.

There was a great range of punches that were working the body and head and by the time the bell rang for the end of round three both lads had given a magnificent display for the crowd. This would have been a cracking bout and if scored would have had to have been a draw as both kids were excellent.

This next bout MMBC would be a tough one as Joe Straw was giving age, weight and experience away in order to help Northside out after pull outs, with Straw stepping up on short notice to face Bobby McDonald.

McDonald entered the ring with two England badges meaning he had been regional champion at least twice, so the MBBC coaches were wondering if they had done the right thing taking this contest.

As the bell rang Bobby looked very slick with good foot movement and boxing ability, and Joe felt for a while that he was going to be outclassed but as the round went on Joe started to have success with his shots, showing that he was more than capable.

In round two Joe built in confidence as he caught his opponent with some tremendous shots, clearly making Bobby’s head go back. This was proving to be a great little contest as Joe marched on planting his feet and putting power in his shots. Bobby continued to try and look the part but Joe was creeping ahead.

Round three was Joe’s best round as his confidence was now sky high as he landed punch after punch against a top kid who knew how to box but as Joe showed no sign of slowing up Bobby started to blow a bit which Joe capitalised on by turning his work rate up. It was for sure a clear win for MBBC so as the bell went the coaches felt confident.

The verdict was announced a split decision so it was a sinking feeling for MBBC as on a Northside home show they were expecting to come up short, but instead the win on a split decision went to Straw, so it was a fantastic victory for the Macclesfield boxer.
