Pioneering Warburton takes on new role

- GOLF

SUE Warburton has been enjoying her golf at Wilmslow Golf Club since 1982 when she joined as a complete beginner after her fourth child started school.

Now she is delighted to be the first-ever Lady to become the club President in its 129th year.

Sue said “To be asked to be the first ever lady as President is a huge honour, especially as it is the ladies 125th anniversary.

“I hope to be able to fulfil my duties to the satisfaction of the many lovely members we have a wonderfully challenging golf course and many exceptional golfers amongst both the men and the women.

“I have always maintained that I play golf for the fresh air, the exercise and the company and any successes are a bonus! Among my golfing highlights are a hole in one on the ninth, winning the Presidents Prize and last year’s Lady Captains Prize and the Ladies Foursomes Knockout. I have represented the club on the Plate team and the Bronze team and my lowest handicap achieved was 18. I served on the Ladies Committee for five years, first as assistant and then as Lady Secretary. “My husband Bill is also a member at Wilmslow, together with elder son Guy and we are also members of Abersoch Golf Club where we enjoy playing links golf.

“Our younger daughter Lucy was a junior, then country member, but is now married with young children.

“It will be a very busy and memorable year at Wilmslow for myself and the club as we will be hosting the Cheshire Ladies Championshipsone of our members Sybra Eardley being the Cheshire County Ladies Golf Captain this year – as well as the English Ladies Amateur Championships and the Wilmslow Crow.”
