Rival full of praise for Askey’s Macc work
EBBSFLEET United manager Daryl McMahon has praised John Askey for the job he has done at Macclesfield Town this season.
McMahon was in the opposite dugout to Askey as his side drew 2-2 with the Silkmen at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.
The point moved top of the table Macc one step closer to earning promotion back to the Football League, and McMahon has commended Askey for the job he has done.
“John Askey’s done a brilliant job. I think they’ve got a really good side there with experience and they play good football,” he said.
“With Aldershot, they’re probably one of the best footballing sides for me. Danny Whitaker in midfield may be getting on in years but he’s an outstanding footballer. [Elliott] Durrell, the right winger, has probably been player of the year and performs every time I’ve seen him play.
“One of my old [Port Vale] team-mates George Pilkington is another well into his thirties but he’s experienced. They’re a good side and it’s no fluke they’re in a position to take the title.
“It was a terrific game on Saturday and I am proud of my players for the way they came back, they have a never say die attitude as a group.
“We didn’t defend well which is a bit unlike us, but the character and spirit amongst them was great.
“The first goal particularly was poor, three or four errors but they happen and we’ve just got to improve that as we go along.”
