Name and title: Megan Jackson, business owner of Tumble Tots, Macclesfield Leisure Centre and Wilmslow Leisure Centre. How did Tumble Tots start?: Tumble Tots is a national business that has been running since 1979. I used to be a ‘tumble tot’ when I was younger and when I came across the chance to buy the franchise covering Macclesfield and Wilmslow, I jumped at the opportunity! Tell us about yourself?: I finished university in 2015 having completed an Events Management BA Hons course. I have always had a passion for working with children and the franchise allows me to combine this with my business skills. I knew it could be quite daunting as I was only 22, but I love interacting with people of all ages and I have always had an ambition to run my own business. I have also lived with the challenge of an autoimmune illness for several years and wanted to prove to myself that this wouldn’t stand in my way. What classes do you offer?: We run age specific classes from six-months to seven-years-old. How do the classes help the children?: They are designed to develop a child’s physical, social and cognitive skills. We use colourful wooden and foam equipment to develop their fundamental movement skills of climbing, balance and agility. Our staff are specially trained to teach the children. I think the most important benefit is self-confidence and having fun, which gives children a positive attitude towards physical activity – helping them later in life. Tell us about the community aspect of Tumble Tots?: We welcome children of all abilities and backgrounds – but Tumble Tots is not just about the child. It also offers a social network for parents, which can be particularly important for first-time mums who may be feeling isolated. Many of our parents, grandparents and carers have found new friendships within the classes. We pride ourselves in creating a welcoming and non-judgemental environment. We also give back to the community through our charitable work. Last year we undertook a skydive, raising £2103.55 for Tommy’s the baby charity. Their work is fundamental to breaking the stigma around miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth. Best part of your job?: Seeing how much the children grow physically and develop their own personalities. I particularly enjoy working with children with additional needs. Most valuable thing you have learnt?: My fears that taking on the challenge of running the business at a young age have been unfounded. I’ve learnt how important it is to have a great team. I have five amazing ladies working around me, supporting me and helping the business thrive. Every day I do what I love and work does not seem like work. Future plans?: I would love for the business to carry on growing and for more children to benefit from the programme. Our goal for this year is to build closer partnerships with local school groups and health visitors.
