MACCLESFIELD manager John Askey has heaped praise on his Danny Whitaker after he scored the 100th league goal of his career.

The 37-year-old midfielder found the net on Saturday as he got on the scoresheet during the Silkmen’s 1-1 draw against Leyton Orient at the Moss Rose.

Askey was full of praise for Whitaker, and he admits that his midfielder has been one of the key players for his side this season.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for Danny

‘Danny stands out because of how long he’s been playing for us’

Whitaker. He’s been brilliant for us like all of the other players have, but Danny stands out because of how long he’s been playing for us,” he said.

“He scored a terrific goal and the Leyton Orient goalkeeper didn’t have time to set.

“I thought it was going wide at first!

“But that’s what Danny has been doing all of his career.”

It’s been a long career for Whitaker, who is currently in his second spell at Macclesfield, after an initial period at the Moss Rose from 2001 to 2006.

Moves to Port Vale, Oldham Athletic and Chesterfield followed, but Whitaker returned to Macc in 2013 and has spent the past five seasons with the club, making it 10 seasons in total at the Moss Rose.
