Straws enjoy successful trip to Wales
IT was another busy day for Macclesfield Boys’ Boxing Club recently as Joe Straw was involved in a show taking place at Mealor ABC near Wrexham.
Six of the MBBC coaches from the gym were attending a training course and two others where providing a demonstration session over at St John’s Church as part of their community partnership event, so that left just Donna Shaw to cover the show over in Wales.
After some negotiations, Joe was moved from bout eleven to bout five as other commitments meat the coaches needed to be back in Macclesfield as early as possible.
Joe was determined to get the win to equal his brother Noel’s increasing record of wins and hopefully stop the banter in the gym.
Joe entered the ring and his opponent was home boxer Carl Roberts, so it was clear that it was going to be a tough old session.
The bell rang and Straw went to work, throwing combinations at will with good solid grounding, inflicting some beautiful powerful shots in Roberts’ direction, who was no push over and took the shots in his stride.
This was the format for the next two rounds, as it was a tough scrap, with both kids giving their all and the crowd were loving it.
It was Straw who had the better work rate and the better shots, resulting in him taking the win on a split, but in reality he didn’t drop any of the rounds so it should have been unanimous.
