Roles tops bill in Avro stableford

ASINGLES Stableford at Avro was won by Peter Roles with 38 points from Phil Normanton 36 and Lee Williams and David Ferguson, both 35.

It needed a cpo on 35 points to give Peter Meddows top spot in a singles Stableford at Avro from Stephen Callaghan, one more than Philip Oakes.

Alderley Edge’s men played a singles medal in two divisions and Paul Penney topped division one with a neat 66 ahead of David Snell 67 and Mike Troup and Mark Walker, both 68.

In division two Ron Ricketts was the main man with 67 from Steve Bennett 69, Ken Hall 71 and John Roberts 72.

The first Summer Stableford at Mottram Hall was won by Matthew Nelson with 41 points, one more than George Swann and Steve Nicholson.

The Sunday Monthly medal at Mottram was won by Mobi Rawthore after a cpo on 72 with Gary Jacques, well clear of Dom Swindells 78.

The latest Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by George Bresnahan with 39 points, two more than Don Farquharso­n and Peter Trussell.

The Thursday Aggregate winner for the winter sea- son was Edwin Green with 224 points from Peter Whitehurst 219, Don Farquharso­n 213 and Peter Trussell 212.

The Winter League singles has also been completed at Shrigley and won by Michael Gibbons with 151 points from Graeme Nimmo 149, Alan Pengelly 146 and Gary Bresnahan 144.

A Sunday Stableford at Styal was led in by Anthony Guy after a cpo on 38 points with Hayden Cook, two more than Sam Hall.

A Seniors Stableford at Styal had Geoffrey Proctor in control with 38 points from Brian Appleby 34 and Malcolm Hollins and Michael Collier, both 33.

Styal ladies played a singles Stableford and it was won by Sue Grange with 27 points closely followed by Mel Hill 26 and Judith Lacy 25.

Alderley Edge profession­al Charle Le Sueur will be holding junior coaching lessons on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays over the coming weeks- to book in or find out more contact Charles at the pro shop.

Robert Jackson will be joining Charles in the PGA national qualifier after winning the qualifier at Alderley with a fine score of 42 points, three more than Mike Easton and Andy Slater.

In last year’s regional final Charles and Steve Bennett finished in a very creditable third place.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance draws for their popular Inter Club Match-Play Knock Outs the Archie Preston Trophy for Mixed Foursomes and the Seniors have seen the preliminar­y rounds completed and now it is down to the last 64 teams to compete in round one of each competitio­n.

The holders of the Archie Preston Trophy, which sees the club Captain and Lady Captain lead out seven mixed pairs in their teams, are Shaw Hill and they will host the final in October.

In round one they will host Sandbach and the rest of the draw featuring our local teams is: Tytheringt­on v Prestwich, Macclesfie­ld v Dunham Forest, Davenport v Stand, Whitefield v Styal, Wilmslow v Sale.

The Seniors Match-Play was only introduced a few years ago into the Alliance calendar and has gone from strength to strength featuring pairs of players over 55 years.

Manchester Golf Club are permanent hosts for the final day and last year the winners were Ashtonunde­r-Lyne. In round one they host Dunham Forest and the rest of the draw featuring our local teams is: Macclesfie­ld v Glossop, Styal v Alsager, Denton v Davenport.
