Youngsters get wedding fever

- RHIANNON MCDOWALL

WEDDING fever hit Macclesfield at the weekend with residents donning red, white and blue to celebrate the royal nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Primary school children took the chance to celebrate the historical occasion by holding street parties in their school playgrounds on Friday, while residents and shop owners carried on the celebrations throughout Saturday.

Children at King’s Infant and Junior School, Prestbury Primary School, Bosley St Mary’s Primary School and Sutton St James Pre-School all made the most of the sunshine to hold fabulous parties with cucumber sandwiches and games.

David Capener, headteacher of Prestbury Primary School, where two children from each year were chosen to play ‘Harry and Meghan’, said: “We have a tradition of marking key national events and it was such a joy to have our own royal wedding lunch to celebrate the marriage of Harry and Meghan.

“We had our very own Harry and Meghans right from nursery to year six.

“It is great as a school to celebrate marriage and the royal family, the children, staff and parents really got into the Spirit of the event.

“Even though it involved a lot of preparation, especially our teaching assistant Mrs Bamford, it was so good to have all the tables and bunting set up, for the children to welcome the Harry and Meghans and to sing the national anthem.”

A street party was held on Cambridge Avenue, and Sutton Ex-Servicemen’s club rolled out the red carpet for guests with an afternoon tea and party. Volunteers at the Windy Way Trust shops on Chestergate also did their bit to celebrate the royal wedding with special displays in both their shop windows.

Jennifer Robinson, who manages the shops, said: “The displays have had a fantastic response from the public.”

Katie Barber, year one teacher at Ivy Bank Primary School, incorporated their celebrations into lessons, with children helping to decorate a wedding dress which was then put on display in the window of the Sue Ryder Charity Shop in Macclesfield.

Ms Barber said: “The children loved decorating the dress and decided that it was fit for a princess.

“The children also made cucumber sandwiches as part of their work on fractions and made wedding cards to send to the happy couple.”
