Time to go wild and create a nature reserve in your garden

-

JUST how wild are you? What is the wildest thing you have done this week? And I’m not talking about drinking half a bottle of prosecco and skateboarding through Salford Precinct.

During June, the Wildlife Trusts are encouraging people to do 30 Days Wild again.

That is 30 days of getting out into the open or simply doing something to do with nature.

Even if it’s reading a nature book or just going out into the garden to feed the birds then you are doing something wild.

Here’s a really good plan.

Look up a bird in your bird book or on the internet. Find out a few facts about it – black, yellow bill, lovely song – the blackbird.

Next sit at the window to see if one of these delightful birds is visiting your garden and watch its behaviour as it charges in and out every 10 minutes or so. This is likely to be because it is feeding young.

Check what kind of food you should be putting out for blackbirds. You can even add going to the supermarket to grab some raisins for the bird table as part of 30 Days Wild.

This seems dead simple but it opens up a whole new world of nature if you aren’t already in there.

And you will be creating a nature reserve in your garden that will link to other gardens in your street and town and county. This huge nature reserve is great for wildlife to move around and expand. So it’s not so selfish after all.

I think 30 Days Wild is one of the best things we have done at the Wildlife Trusts and you are not too late to get a pack with a diary/poster and stickers. Obviously you can stretch further than your gardens and really find your local wild places, places where you can see wildlife and feel healthier because you are exercising outdoors.

You can sign up for 30 Days Wild at http:// action.wildlifetrusts.org/ page/20877/petition/1.

I will be writing a daily blog on www.lancswt.org. uk and I will be really chuffed if you share your activities with me.
