Straw’s quality to fore in Wales

- BOXING

IT’S been yet another busy couple of weeks for Macclesfield Boys’ Boxing Club as they had boxers competing on a number of shows recently.

Joe Straw was in action for MBBC as he went up against Sam Morris on a Llay Boxing Club show in Wrexham.

As the bell rang the instruction from the Macc corner was to go straight to work. Morris looked very confident switching stances from southpaw to orthodox, but once Straw started to impose himself it soon went out the window as Straw stalked Morris, cutting the ring down and unloading some big shots.

In round two, Straw was pushing on, and everytime Morris landed with one, Straw would fire back and land three, totally dominating the ring. Morris would try and look slick but Straw would step up throwing quality shots.

In round three the hard work was done so it was time for Straw to put some fancy boxing in as he proceeded to box off the back foot, letting Morris lead then coming back with some nice counters, showing his ability to come forward or use the ring to draw his opponent.

It was a great performance from Straw as Morris was no pushover. Straw took the unanimous decision and it was another great result away from home and region result.

Another recent fight involving an MBBC fighter saw Sam Coates fight on a bill put together by Centurions ABC in Wigan, as he went up against home fighter Tom Jervis. It was a short notice fight, taken just 48 hours beforehand.

Round one saw both boxers trying to impress, with Coates showing that he’s improving with every contest while Jervis was a strong kid who was no pushover.

In round two Coates looked to be on top as he threw some beautiful combinations in his opponent’s direction, some hitting cleanly and surely scoring the points, but you never know when you are boxing the home fighter.

Round three was another close round with both kids putting it all on line for crowd in attendance. It was a great contest that received huge applauds but the decision went to Jervis favour on a split. Coates was not demoralised as he knew he given a winning performance even the judges didn’t see it his way.

Macclesfield’s busy period also saw cruiserweight Chris Bowes take on home fighter Joel Aminu on a Sheffield City ABC show.

It was a Saturday afternoon show and a bout MBBC had taken on one week’s notice

The first round was a bit slow as Aminu came out with a fast work rate and Bowes took a while to match it, but once there he gave as good as he got.

Round two was a better round as Bowes caught his opponent with a powerful back hand that stunned Aminu, but to be fair he came back, although a little more hesitant having felt the power of Bowes.

Round three was pretty much the same, with high tempo work rate from both boxers showing just how fit they were, so it was an excellent display from both as the crowd showed their appreciation.

The decision went to the home boxer in a close fought contest, but Bowes loved every second and congratulated his opponent on a great contest like the true gentleman he is.
