Ellershaw clear winner at Avro

AMIDWEEK Stableford at Avro was led in with 35 points by Derek Ellershaw, four more than Stephen Callaghan and Neil Flood.

Tony Mullin posted an impressive 38 points to wn the Avro Seniors Charity Stableford from Derek Jones 36 and Bob Holt 35.

Macclesfie­ld ladies enjoy their Exchange Day at Mellor and Townscliff­e and the winning team of three with 69 points was Jill Hunter-Blench, Gill Evans and Gill Snelson.

The finished four clear of Judy Mutter, Chris Hickmott and Chris Gleaves.

Back at Macc a singles Stableford was led in by Wendy Higgins with 31 points from Gill Evans 30 and Alycia Sutton and June Sumner, both 29.

The first summer medal for Davenport’s men had division one topped by Stuart Johnston with 65 ahead of Clive Burgess 67 and James Tweedy 70.

Division two’s hotshot was Peter Emondson with 69 one less then Chris Souter, Chris Bray and John Culley and in division three it needed a cpo on 71 to see Nigel Potts home from Charles Parry.

Davenport ladies played a Team of Four event supporting the assistant pro and the fab four of J Sykes, D Illing- worth, P Massey and Danuta Silva posted an impressive 98 points, seven more than F Carmichael, S Elliott, I Taylor and J Leary.

The May medal for Alderley Edge;s men had division one topped by Mike Easton with 66 from Nigel Feathersto­ne 67 and cricket legend Rick Ford 68.

In division two Simon Allen also posted 66 to finish ahead of Mike O’Regan 69 and Simon Barber 70.

A ladies medal at Alderley Edge was won by Liz McGuire with 77 from Helen Fitch 78 and Mo Monk, Olwen Davies and Tracy Smith, all 79.

Prestbury ladies were in par mode and in division one Nicky Markland led in with +2 from Margaret Simons +1 and Gill Mellor and Helen Bolam, both level par.

In division two Christine Shuttlewor­th was the only one to neat par on +1 with Gillian Buxton next in on -2.

Prestbury’s men were in ‘major’ action for the Harry Pierpoint Memorial Trophy and it needed a cpo on 70 to see Adam Bunt claim the trophy from Oliver Wilson and Cheshire’s young star Tom Kirton.

Shrigley Hall’s men played their monthly medal and club legend Alan Pengelly topped division one with 71, one less than Andrew Kershaw, Martin Firth and Will Osbaldesto­n.

Sunil Mehta cruised to victory in division two with 76, four less than Arun Mehta and Andrew Mitchell.

A Five Club Challenge at Mottram Hall saw Graham Roche show his adaptable skills with his return of 39 points taking him one clear of Andrew Gibson.

A Seniors Stableford at Styal was won by Malcolm Hollins with 41 points from Brian Appleby 40 and Robert Lynn 39.

A Wednesday Stableford at Styal had Ian Thomason first past the post with 36 points from Ray Auton 34 and Anton Bardsley 33.

The latest round of the Styal ladies Summer Cup was won by Pat Chadwick after a cpo on 15 points with Pat Millatt, one more than Yvonne Kelly and Gayle Blackburn.

Crewe Golf Club provided a excellent venue for the penultimat­e fixture of the Alliance winter season and the superbly presented and scenic course produced a nerve-jangling finish as players looked to gain vital points for the Alliance Order of Merit top spots.

The individual pro section saw four players locked on 36 points with Poulton Park’s Phil Archer taking a big step to retaining his OoM trophy as he tied with Paul Granell (Vale Royal Abbey), Olly Smith (Ashton-on-Mersey) and Alistair Waddell (Styal).

There were also a fourway tie for the top pro am spot with the cpo on 41 points going in favour of Stamford’s Mark Smith and Martin Dwyer from Ben Thompson and Keith Caddick (Hazel Grove), Phil Archer with Hazel Grove’s Roy Campion and Craig Corrigan and Chris Ireland (Lymm).

No problems in the am am section as Malkins Bank duo Ian Farthing and Steve King strolled to victory as their 39-point haul took them four clear of Lee Warren (Northenden) and Dave Hemingway (Chorley) who won a cpo from Chorlton’s Don Milligan and Mike Fenton.

The competitio­n also featured an Alliance debut for Alderley Edge profession­al Charles Le Sueur who enjoyed the experience.

Meanwhile, the Cheshire Union of Golf Clubs are delighted with the new two-year sponsorshi­p they have agreed with Robinson’s Brewery.

Cheshire secretary Peter Whitehead said: “The Cheshire board are excited about the sponsorshi­p partnershi­p with Robinsons and the money received will be given to various county activities throughout the year and Robinsons will be invited to take part in a range of county competitio­ns and functions as part of the deal.

“This collaborat­ion between two iconic and establishe­d Cheshire institutio­ns is a good match and one which we believe will be mutually beneficial.
