KING’S Girls Division athletes have powered their way to a district and county double first lifting the Macclesfield and then the East Cheshire titles at both junior and intermediate level.

Both the junior team featuring pupils from Years 8 and 9 and the intermediate team with girls from Years 9 and 10 have now qualified for the North-West regional finals and a stunning 12 girls have been selected to represent Macclesfield at the ESAA Schools’ Cup Cheshire County Track and Field Championships in June.

The impressive Claudia Rodriguez-Martinez, a naturally gifted athlete, produced the stand out performances winning the 100 metres county event in 12.72 and then coming third in the high jump with 1m 48cm.

A dedicated Macclesfield Harrier who trains twice a week both with school and club coaches, Claudia has a no nonsense approach to the challenge of head to head sprinting: “You just have to be single-minded and focus on your race. I love my athletics and at the moment just want to do as well as I possibly can and see how far that takes me.”

The 12 girls who will represent Macclesfield in the county championships are: Claudia Rodriguez-Martinez, Cordy Kight, Lottie Dennett, Lottie Clark, Lara Tabachnik, Izzy Moores, Belle Roche, Hope Sutton, Amy Knight, Olivia Hunter, Betty Kemp and Susie Moores

King’s Girls Division PE Teacher and Athletics Coach Lisa Booker said: “There were some superb individual performances but all girls performed competitively and with determination to do their best for the team result.

“I am so pleased that Athletics continues to be a popular and strong summer sport.”
