Military museum is soaring success

-

MACCLESFIELD MP David Rutley visited a military site which played a pivotal role in the country’s darkest hour.

The Avro Heritage Museum, near Poynton, is home to some of the last surviving aircrafts which did battle during the Second World War.

Based at the site of the former Woodford Aerodrome, it was where some of the world’s most iconic aircrafts, such as the Nimrod and the Lancaster Bomber, were assembled.

The Lancaster was built at the factory in 1942 and played a key role in supporting the historic Dambuster Raids, targeting dam facilities across the Ruhr Valley.

These were Britain’s most successful bombers of the Second World War.

Mr Rutley was treated to a tour of the historic factory’s extensive collection and was able to get a look at the famous Bomber.

The aircraft which includes a visible fuselage, is also open to the public and has retained its original interior.

On his visit, David also had the opportunity to inspect the cockpit of an Avro Vulcan, one of the 136 Vulcans which were constructed at Woodford Aerodrome.

Woodford Aerodrome was owned by BAE Systems until its closure in 2011 and it was then that the Avro Heritage Trust was created.

Mr Rutley spoke after his visit and said it was important to recognise the role played by those at the factory for several decades.

He said: “It was an honour to visit the Avro Heritage Museum again to view its Lancaster bomber fuselage, and to have the opportunity to recognise the important contribution of many Poynton residents who have worked at Woodford Aerodrome over many years. I am grateful to Mr Nichol for his excellent tour, and to all the staff at Avro Heritage Museum who have helped to make this impressive facility such a success.”

The Museum is holding a special Air Fair on the weekend of 7th and 8th of July, featuring fly-pasts from the BBMF Lancaster bomber, as well as flight simulators, helicopters, and many classic vehicles.
