Honour for ex-treasurer, 79
A WOMAN said she will have to buy a new hat for when she goes to receive her award from the Queen.
Dorothy Kay, who is originally from Poynton, was given a royal honour for her voluntary service.
The 79-year-old who worked as the treasurer for Macclesfield Town Council during the 1960s, was nominated to receive the British Empire Medal fore more than 50 years of voluntary service.
Alongside her husband, John, 82, she was responsible for creating and running the Swythamley First Responders.
And it was members of the group who nominated her for the prestigious award.
Her husband also received a royal award in 2012 for his services to the group.
Mrs Kay who had also fostered eight children in the past said it was a complete shock.
She said: “I couldn’t believe it, it is really unbelievable.
“My husband is always making up stories and jokes. He picked up the letter and starting saying ‘from her Majesty the Queen’ and I told him to give to me because I thought he was just making it up and then I read it myself and it was from the Queen.
She added: “I will have to get a hat.”
