I’ve joined club on the up: Yates

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town have appointed Mark Yates as the club’s new manager on a three-year deal.

Yates joins the Silkmen after an impressive campaign with Solihull Moors, where he guided the team to safety after arriving back in November while they were adrift at the bottom of the National League table.

He will now attempt to fill the shoes of John Askey at the Silkmen, and Yates is delighted to be heading to the Moss Rose.

“I’m really pleased. It’s happened really quickly but I’m joining a club with momentum and a club that are on the up,” he said.

“Everybody at the Football Club did a fantastic job last season and I just want to carry that on in a very competitive League Two.

“I’m looking forward to working with the players that are here but also bringing in some new faces too.

“I’ve been very impressed with the chairman and I’m sure we’re going to work tirelessly to put together a squad that will do well next season.”

It’s been a long process for Macclesfield as they looked to ensure they appointed the right manager, and club chairman Mark Blower is pleased with the decision.

“I’m delighted to announce Mark as our new manager. He has all the attributes that we were looking for,” he said.

“I’m sure he will be a big asset for the football club. He has all the credentials to be the perfect man to lead Macclesfield Town on their return to the EFL.”

The Silkmen have been searching for a new boss ever since Askey departed to take charge of Shrewsbury Town earlier this month.

The managerial career of Yates has seen him also take charge of Kidderminster Harriers, Cheltenham Town and Crawley Town.

He represented Kidderminster and Cheltenham during his playing days, while also having spells at the likes of Birmingham City, Burnley and Doncaster Rovers.

He was able to fight off some heavy competition for the role of manager,

including Joaquin Gomez, Jay Saunders, Keith Curle and Steve Davis.

The club also announced that they will be making a further announcement about Yates’ backroom staff in due course, while a press conference will be held on Thursday unveil him.

Meanwhile, Macclesfield have been handed a first round draw in the to officially Carabao Cup at home to League One side Bradford City. The tie will take place over the week commencing August 13.
