Supporters have crucial role to play: Yates

MACCLESFIE­LD Town manager Mark Yates admits that the fans have a huge role to play this season as the Silkmen prepare for life back in the Football League.

Macc are well underway with their pre-season preparatio­ns, with their first friendly of the summer taking place on Saturday when they make the trip to Hurst Cross to face Ashton United.

Further friendlies come against Altrincham, Burnley, Wrexham and Stockport, as Macclesfie­ld look to get in tip-top shape for their first season back in League Two since 2012.

Yates has been in charge of the Silkmen for just under a month, replacing John Askey who left to go to League One side Shrewsbury Town.

The new Macclesfie­ld boss is excited about the next campaign, but has stressed just how important the supporters can be in helping his side have a successful year.

“The fans have got a massive part to play this season.

“They obviously played a critical role last year and they will do this season too,” he told the club’s official website.

“The chairman really sold the club to me and Neil Howarth has always regarded Macclesfie­ld very highly, as has Danny Whitaker and the fans are obviously a big part of that.”

Macclesfie­ld are currently third favourites with the bookmakers to suffer relegation, and while Yates is under no illusions with how tough it will be, the Silkmen boss has faith that his side can have a positive
