Sheep dog trials set for weekend return

- RHIANNON MCDOWALL

PERFECTLY trained canines are limbering up for the return of the town’s hugely popular sheepdog trials.

For the past 70 years dog handlers have battled it out to be named top dog at the Macclesfield Sheep Dog Trials.

And this year’s event - which takes place at Sutton Hall Farm over the Weekend of August 4th to 6th - promises to be as exciting as ever.

There will also be plenty of other activities to enjoy over the weekend, including the tug-o-war, BBQ and beer on Friday, Saturday’s craft fayre and fell race, and the Sunday Concert – which includes performances from Johnny Roxx, Helen England, comedian John Martin, with Norman Prince as MC.

Money raised at the trials is donated to charity. The benefactors from last year’s raffle - which raised £2,400 - were the East Cheshire Hospice, Rossendale Trust, MacMillan Cancer Support, Ronald McDonald House and Northwest Air Ambulance and The British Heart Foundation.

Macclesfield MP David Rutley, patron of the trials, attended a special cheque presentation. He said: “As well as being a great day out and a popular fixture of the Macclesfield calendar, the Sheepdog Trials help to raise funds to support the important work that these organisations undertake in and around our local communities. I hope that as many local residents as possible will attend the event and give their support to this great local tradition.”

Tickets can be bought on the day.
