- RHIANNON MCDOWALL

MACCLESFIELD’S first ever Pride event will celebrate and promote diversity in the town.

The free, family event takes place this Saturday (July 28), and will celebrate inclusivity for all, no matter age, gender, creed or colour.

There will be a variety of stalls around Market Square, Chestergate and Mill Street, selling cakes, crafts and providing information.

Food and drink will also be available, with a treasure hunt and lots of activities for kids.

Acts on the ‘Superbowl Stage’, outside the town hall, will provide entertainment throughout the day.

Denise Hartley-Dickens, who is on the MaccPride Steering Group, is urging everyone to join in the celebration.

She said: “The team behind the first ever Pride in Macclesfield is made up of people of all ages and backgrounds, some from the local LGBT community and some not.

“We have been overwhelmed with the fabulous support we have been shown by the people and businesses of our town, and are really looking forward to bringing an amazing day full of community spirit, positivity and rainbows to Macclesfield!”

Sue Armitt, whose whole family is involved with the event, added: “Celebrating difference is for everyone and promoting equality is everyone’s responsibility.”

The event has been organised by UTOPIA, a youth support group for members of the town’s LGBT+ community, who joined the Barnaby Festival Parade to share celebrate the event.

It will run from 1pm until 6pm, with a ticket only event held at Fever & Boutique from 7pm until 10pm, with a live performance from Going Gaga.

Tickets for the Fever & Boutique cost £5 and are available via the MaccPride facebook page.
