A CHARITY which supports residents in their retirement is fundraising to meet its rent.

Activity in retirement (AIR), based at the Senior Citizens Hall, on Duke Street, has enjoyed the use of the space for free for almost 30 years, but is now required to pay rent after Cheshire East Council put it up for lease.

Liz Welton, chairwoman, said their raffle coffee morning, supported by local businesses, raised £700.

She said: “The Coffee Morning was held to boost AIR’s funds to help with the rental costs of the Senior Citizens Hall. For 29 years AIR and other Senior groups have had use of the Hall free of charge but since July last year we have been paying rent which has greatly increased our expenditure. Cheshire East Council are withdrawing funds for the Hall at the end of this year. Air have around 700 members attending many activities at the Hall and without this facility there would be many problems.”

Liz added that they are now hoping Macclesfield Town Council will step in to help.

AIR members are encouraged to support the charity by taking part in an ongoing silent auction for a reclining bed worth £699.

The bed has been donated by the Adjustamatic Comfort Store on Churchill Way.

Sealed bids are requested by September 30 directly to the store, where the bed can also be viewed.
