Simon leads way in golf marathon

ON a gloriously sunny day, the captain Simon Barber and his team of 12 golfers from Alderley Edge Golf Club succeeded in completing their 72 golf hole challenge in support of the Captain’s Charity - Macmillan Cancer Support.

Starting at 4:20 am they completed their four rounds at 8:45 pm to a warm welcome from a large group of supporters who came to the club to cheer them home - a magnificen­t achievemen­t for all the 12 golfers.

During the day, the scores from each course produced individual winners: Paul Penney (AEGC morning round), Ollie Lane (Mottram Hall), Gavin Elly (Styal) and Steve Bennett (AEGC evening round). Paul Penney had the best overall score for the four rounds.

On the 72nd hole, the Captain held his nerve to play a magnificen­t shot out of the Captain’s bunker, watched by the large group of members and friends. An informal social evening followed, with food and drinks plus entertainm­ent from Harmonix Vocal Collection and an excellent evening was enjoyed by everyone.

Simon Barber, was very pleased to announce that he had raised at least £5,500 towards his target of £10,000.

He then thanked all those involved: the other 11 golfers who played the 72 golf holes, Chris Hoyland and the catering staff, Harmonix Vocal Collection for their performanc­e and to all the staff, members, friends and supporters who worked to make the day a success and contribute so much to the fund raising for the Captain’s charity.

The Harold Humphreys medal at Alderley was won by Nigel Pugh with a super score of 66 taking him four shots clear of Derek Shenton.

Edge’s ladies were in EWGA medal action with Alison Roberts posting a fine nett 67 to finish four shots clear of Yvonne Grundy.

Macclesfie­ld ladies faced blistering conditions for their Invitation Day which was won by Gill Evans and her Knutsford partner Kim Blake with a fine haul of 48 points and Gill also had the only ‘Two’ of the day chipping in from the fringe of the 18th hole.

The runners-up were Judy Mutter and Sarah Gilmore (Tytheringt­on) with 44 points and Carole Ryder (Prestbury) won the nearest the pin on the 18th.

It needed a cpo on 69 to decide the winner of the fourth Summer medal at Davenport with Andy Milne getting the nod ahead of Bob Quigley and Philip Marland.

The third summer medal at Davenport had the divisions led in by Andy Milne 68, Mark Thompson 66 and Alan Davidson with a stunning 64.

Davenport ladies played for the Centenary Salver and top of the divisions were Shirley Luther with a great haul of 44 points, Sheila Elliott 39 and Elizabeth Pell 35.

Medal action at Mot- tram Hall had Simon Truby in the driving seat with 71 from Josh Swan 72 and Martin Routley 73.

Captain’s Day at Prestbury was won by Andrew Greenhalgh with a nett 70 taking him three shots clear of the logjam of Ceri James, Garry Titchen, Philip Nieman, Kenneth Williamson, Alan Farrer and Stephen Burnage.

Prestbury ladies enjoyed Lady Captain’s Day and taking Jenny Purves’ top prize was Caroline Harrison-Croft with 69 from Glenys Smith 71 and Josephine Harrison, Margaret Simons and Mary Saton, all 73.

The Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Gill Kershaw with 40 points from Ray Haddock 39 and Rod Scott, Don Farquharso­n, and Graeme Nimmo, all 36.

The latest Senior White Tee medal at Styal was led in by Neil Cowan with 65 from Peter Christie 67 and Gordon Laurence 68.

Round four of the Styal Mid-Summer Junior series was won by Dylan Bennett with 21 points, three more than Thomas Woolley and Christian Brooker.

James Crater was unstoppabl­e in the David Horsey medal at Styal posting 64 to romp home from Colin Hazle 68 and Kevin Doherty 69.

Styal ladies played a BB Stableford for the Holohan Trophy and first past the post with 44 points were Helen Billington and L Bennett from K Hobbs and C Pogson 43.

Houghwood Golf Club were great hosts for the match between Lancashire Boys and Cheshire Boys on a day of sweltering heat.

Players and spectators enjoyed great views from the course over Liverpool. Southport and North Wales and it looked set for a keen competitio­n in the afternoon singles after the teams had ended the morning foursomes locked at 3-3.

Winners for Lancashire were Josh Fallows Royal Birkdale and Jamie Van Wyk (Royal Lytham), George Holland (Southport and Ainsdale) and Matthew Jackman (Southport and Ainsdale) and Jack Wallbank (Ashton & Lea) and Josh Lang (Southport Old Links).

Cheshire replied through Sandiway duo Daniel Gibson and Liam Gobin, Sam Johnson (Astbury) and Nathan Newton (Upton) and Greg Osborne a Delamere Forest) and Kieran Underwood (Hartford).

Cheshire set off well in the singles with a half for their Captain Josh Turnock (Prestbury) with Josh Fallows and a win for Bramhall’s Archie Palmer over Jamie Van Wyk.

Then Lancashire set the course on fire with wins from George Holland, Matthew Jackman, (Royal Lytham), Luke Bartram (Rossendale), Sam Thornton (Lancaster) and Oliver Duck (Southport and Ainsdale) with a half from Grady Rogerson (Royal Lytham) with Daniel Gibson.

Matthew Gresty (Childwall added another point with consolatio­n wins from Greg Osborne and Matthew Dodd-Berry (Royal Liverpool) reducing Lancashire’s winning margin to 11-7.

It’s getting down to thinking about reaching finals day in two of the top Manchester Alliance Inter Club knock out competitio­ns, the biggest of their kind in the country.

In the blue riband Dunham Forest Trophy competitio­n reigning champions Manchester are through to the last 16 in round three and face a tricky trip to Chorley as they look to reach the quarter finals

Hopes with our local teams rest with Styal who visit Bolton Old Links and Davenport who host Hart Common

In the City Glass Men’s Foursomes the final will be held at Houldswort­h Golf Club- the 2017 winners who made an early exit in defence of their title.
