Macc can prove doubters wrong

- SHELDAN KEAY

NEW Macclesfield Town signing Michael Rose is confident the team can prove the doubters wrong and have a successful campaign in League Two this season.

Rose became one of the Silkmen’s latest recruits over the weekend when he joined following a successful trial period with the club.

He began his career at Manchester United, before going on to make over 450 appearances in the Football League for various clubs.

Rose arrives at a Macc side that are preparing for life back in the Football League after their National League title win last season, but they are currently one of the bookies favourites to go straight back down.

With that in mind, he wants to silence those critics and hopes he can play his part in helping the team have a good year back in League Two.

“The new gaffer’s come in and we’ve got to stay in this league and do well. From what I’ve seen since I’ve been here, we’re really capable of doing something,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’d say I’m still quite old-school. I’m competitive, so I’ll run around and put my foot in. I like to get on the ball and take a few set-pieces. I’d like to think I’m a hard-working, influential midfielder.”

Rose has previously played for the likes of Morecambe, Swinton Town, Hereford United, Stockport County and Rochdale during his career, and recently trained with former club Rochdale in a bid to keep up his fitness.

That played a big role in his transfer to the Moss Rose, with the 35-year-old midfielder explaining just how the move came about.

“Keith Hill gave Neil a call, to see if I could come and take part in some training. I then came in for a week and got myself a deal - hopefully managing to impress the gaffer,” he said.

“It’s been a long, quiet summer if I’m honest. I have just been waiting for the phone to ring after being released.”

Rose was also part of the Macc side that lost 2-0 to Burnley during their pre-season match last week, and despite the loss he thought it was a decent performance from his side.

He said: “I think we played well in spells against Burnley. We had a couple of chances but they showed their class and I think the lads got some good hard work out of it.”
