Returning Taylor makes positive impact

MACCLESFIELD Town manager Mark Yates has praised goalkeeper Rhys Taylor following his return to the club.

Taylor has arrived back at the Moss Rose on a one-year deal following a previous spell for the club from 2013 to 2015.

His first game back for the team came on Friday when he played in the 2-0 defeat against Premier League side Burnley, and Yates was pleased with

what he saw from the 28-year-old.

“Rhys has only been in for a few days and I thought he was excellent against Burnley,” he told the club’s official website.

“He made a few saves when we needed him to and he was vocal, kicked well and made some good decisions, so him and another goalkeeper will compete for the number one place.”

Yates is keen to have his Macclesfield side playing attractive football, and he was pleased to see them return to that style of play after the frustration of last week’s performance against Altrincham.

“There were no negatives against Burnley. I didn’t want to see what I saw last week against Altrincham and the players were much better,” he said.

“Last Tuesday we went long and didn’t make angles for ourselves or try and play. If we’re not going to be brave enough with this group of players then we never will be.

“That’s not to say we can’t go into the strikers sometimes, but we have to mix up the game as we weren’t at our best with the ball against Altrincham.

“That’s not what this group is about.

“They won the league last year playing good football and we’ve added a few bigger players but that doesn’t mean we can’t play.”

Macclesfield’s next match was due to take place as the Express went to print on Tuesday, with the side going up against Wrexham.

The two teams were big rival in the National League last season, and Yates was expecting a tough game.

He said: “They’ll want to prove that it should have been them going up, so we’re looking forward to the game and we’ll try to carry on our good work.”
