Poynton students host Royal reception
A HIGH school has been celebrating all things royal with a special tea party in honour of the country’s ruling family.
Poynton High School invited the elderly community to the event to give them a chance to socialise and meet new people.
Dozens packed into the school hall , on Thursday, July 19,and sat down at tables adorned with pompoms and paper chains, in matching red, white and blue.
They were then treated to a quintessentially British tea party, with everything you might expect, including cupcakes, sandwiches, and of course scones with jam and cream.
Guests also enjoyed music and year eight pupils then got up and danced with them, making up their own routine for the guests to enjoy.
Their knowledge of the Royal Family was then put to the test, when they took part in a quiz put together by pupils, with questions ranging on the day from ‘who is the Queen? to what is her favourite hobby?
Teacher and organiser Rachel Long said it was a great achievement for the school and she was very proud of its success.
She said: “The main intention of the tea party is to provide for the elderly and give them an opportunity to socialise and to be treated well.
“Around seventy-five guests filled up all the space in the hall. This is a marvellous achievement which we are extremely proud of.”
In preparation for the day, children put together special ‘favour boxes’ which were filled with sweets and confetti, that guests were then able to take home.
Rhian Dempsey, design teacher, said: “We made gift boxes for the visitors, they contain a wind hanger which sits on a tree and spins in the wind. Each guest took one home.”
Pupils organised the event themselves and said they enjoyed helping the elderly. One said: “This was a great experience for the guests and an opportunity for them to socialise and have a change from the norm.”
One guest told staff on the day: ‘I’m really glad to be here because I enjoy speaking with young people.”
