Toss loss key in Kerridge defeat

- JOHN GRAYSTON

KERRIDGE made the short trip to Wilmslow Wayfarers on Saturday to play their 2nd XI hoping to get a game completed before the rain came.

Kerridge lost the toss and were put in to bat on a wicket with plenty of grass on it and thin cloud cover.

It seemed like a good toss to win for Wayfarers, especially with Kerridge being short of players and a reshuffled batting order set about their task.

Kerridge started badly and were soon two wickets down with very few runs on the board.

The run rate dried up as the Kerridge batsmen dug in on an unpredictable surface.

Stephen Regan was moved up to open the batting and offered some good shots to hit a solid 27 but other batsmen got in then got out without scoring too heavily.

The notable exception was Joe Januszewski who, batting in the middle order, scored a well put together 39 to help Kerridge finish on 140 all out.

After the shaky start, Kerridge were pleased they had a target to bowl at.

Moin Khan and Waseem Muzaffar shared four wickets each for Wayfarers.

Wayfarers’ reply started in the worst possible manner, losing their opener without troubling the scorers.

But as Kerridge hunted wickets, Wayfarers kept scoring runs.

Tom Gaskell finished with figures of 39 for 5 from 12 overs but despite his efforts there were not enough runs to play with and Wayfarers reached the target for the loss of six wickets.

Kerridge need to regroup quickly as they face another top of the table clash when they host Cheadle Hulme Ladybridge next Saturday.

Thanks as usual to this weeks ball sponsors Mr and Mrs Staton.
