Youngsters are on course for success

SOME of the areas top junior golfers enjoyed a great day at the Mellor and Townscliff­e Junior Open, and coped well with the heat – and loved the Mellor greens, which were in great condition.

To win the coveted trophy, you had to have the best gross, so Daniel Lynch of Styal Golf Club won it with a great score of gross 79.

Both Daniel and the best girl scorer Siobhan Grayson (ringway GC) with 100 are now entered into the Telegraph Vitality Junior Golf Championsh­ip.

Captain’s Day at Alderley Edge was played over two rounds and setting the early pace was Ron Ricketts with 64 from Oliver Lane and Bill Fisher, both 65.

In round two it was even closer as Alex Pannell led in with 69 after a CPO with Robert Anderson, and just a shot back were Simon Edbury, Dan Feathersto­ne, Simon Allen, Steven Yakub and Steve Bell.

Edge’s ladies played a 9-hole Stableford with Karen Pennington in hot form with 23 points from Helen Williams 21.

Davenport’s men played a singles Stableford and John Lee was first past the post with 42 points from John Wood, 40, and Michael Harris 39.

Davenport Ladies played for the Granma’s Trophy and top of the divisions were Muriel Shaw, 43 points, Irene Taylor, 41, and Aileen Lim with a colossal 44.

Sumner won a CPO for third place on 36 points from Nancy Barkworth and Judy Mutter.

The latest Challenge medal at Mottram Hall was won by James Black after a CPO on 68 with James Tunnicliff­e, one less than Alan Welsh.

A midweek Stableford at Prestbury was won by Craig Jones with 41 points, one more than Cheshire Junior Captain Josh Turnock and Ian Johnson.

A Stableford for Prestbury Ladies was won by Tracy Titchen after a CPO on 27 points with Moira McGrath.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Peter Will with 41 points from Mike Gates, 38, and Al Lloyd, Rod Scott and Janet Gates, all 36.

Styal seniors were in Yellow Tee action with Terry Hooper on top with 42 points, one more than Robert Lynn and Len Rowland.

The latest round of the Styal Ladies Summer Cup was won by Pat Millatt with 17 points from Chris Pogson 14.

There was a good field of over 70 players enjoying a superb day in glorious sunshine at Bramhall Golf Club with their superbly revamped clubhouse for the first qualifying lif i round d i in the h battle for the Manchester Past Lady Captain’s Trophy. Qualifying for the final that will be staged at Davyhulme Park GC, the home club of the Past Captain’s captain, Shirley Sharp, were the top two pairs.

Top of the shop were Saddlewort­h’s Pauline Richardson and Julie Ward from Audrey Jones and Jill Wolstencro­ft, of Romile y GC.

Also in the frame were Chris Pierson and Julie Wild (Oldham) and Jennifer Fallows and Elaine Clark from Manchester GC. The second round of qualifying will be hosted at Denton Golf Club.

Warrington Golf Club were wonderful hosts for the Second Summer Life Members’ Meeting providing a fantastic course and superb clubhouse hospitalit­y with 56 pairs in the field enjoying a mem- orable bl d day.

The competitio­n was one of the closest on record with just a point separating the top nine pairs with five locked on 46 points at the top of the leader board.

The final nod went to Tytheringt­on’s Anthony Shaw and Carlo Mysko ahead of David Roberts and Peter Heald, (Lymm), Gordon Foster and Graham Phillips (Crewe), Ian Hulson and Malcolm Heath (Alsager), and John Kennerley (Prestbury) and Jeffrey Webbs (Tytheringt­on).

Cheshire president Chris Moore also enjoyed the day and the course along with guest Steve Dunn from county sponsors Robinsons Brewery and he gave deserving thanks to the club, all of the players and the dedicated Cheshire workers for making this a great day of golf.
