Thousands enjoy Poynton’s big show

- DOMINIC SMITHERS

THOUSANDS came out to enjoy the annual Poynton Show.

More than 5,000 people packed into the annual event at Poynton Park.

Around a dozen tents sold food, drink and crafts and there were a number of sheep and cattle shows.

The main event was The Stampede Sunt company, a troupe of horse riders from Moscow, who took centre stage, wielding swords and lances wowed crowds with their daring performance. Aron Pearson, from Poynton, has been volunteering at the show for almost two decades.

He helps organise the event every year and told the Express this year’s event on Saturday, August 25, was fantastic.

He said: “I was a great success, we are really happy with the numbers we got through the gate this year.

“I came across the horse riders when I was searching for something a bit dif- ferent for the main stage. We have had hundreds of comments about how good they were, some people said they were one of the best acts we’ve had.

“Looking at the photographs of the expressions in the crows they were mesmerised.”

Aron said the show is also an opportunity for the town to come together each year.

He added: “It is just great for the community, all being together at the show. Quite often there are a lot of people who may only see someone they know just once a year and it is at the show.

“Being part of that and helping that makes it all worthwhile.”

But he said he was not alone in bringing the show to life.

Hundreds of volunteers spent the year planning the one-day event, including 50 volunteers who spent a week helping to set all the tents up ready for the big day.

Since it began in 1885 the festival has become one of the largest horticul- tural shows around. And planning for 2019’s show is almost underway, with the first planning meeting set for early September.

Aron said: “It takes a lot of time to get it all ready. The first meeting for the management committee is September 10.

“And it takes a full week to set everything up.

“But it is really great when you get the wonderful comments, it is hard work but it pays off when it comes together like this one did. It really was a great show.”
