A GROUP which is standing against Brexit has been campaigning on the streets of Poynton.
Members of the Macclesfield & East Cheshire branch of the European Movement ran a street stall to ask residents what they thought of the decision for the UK to leave the European Union.
The group, which meets at the Park Tavern Library, in Macclesfield, supports a ‘people’s vote’ which would see the general public a say on the final deal between the EU and the UK.
Branch Chair Chris Foster said it is the biggest decision the country has made in half a century.
He said: “Thanks to everyone who took the time to stop and talk about Brexit with us; it’s the biggest change the UK’s faced for at least 50 years, so it’s important that we all get beyond the headlines. We all agree that government at every level needs to change to make Cheshire fit for the 21st century.
He added: “The EU’s not perfect, but Cheshire’s benefited from the UK’s membership through farm subsidies, scientific collaborations and business ties; Brexit’s a massive distraction and a waste of resources.”
The European Movement has been campaigning for Britain’s future with Europe for more than 70 years.
On the day the group also set up their own “Brexitometer” to gauge the views of passers by on the pros and cons of leaving the European Union.
Chris added: “It’s not a scientific survey, but this straw poll shows that people in Poynton don’t think Brexit’s going to turn out well. The reality of Brexit will only become clear in the ‘deal’ arrived at in the negotiations that are taking place now; if Brexit is really a democratic process, then we deserve a vote on that deal .”
