Josh celebrates big day in style

DELAMERE Forest Golf Club have hosted the Cheshire Boys Championsh­ips in splendid style since 1984 and they have an honours board in their club displaying the list of champions on their course – which includes the likes of European Tour star Paul Waring.

The competitio­n was played in scorching conditions with a course in a terrific, challengin­g condition to provide a great test of golf.

Cheshire Boys Captain Josh Turnock (Prestbury GC) was celebratin­g his 18th birthday and set the pace with a two-underpar first round of 70, closely followed by home stars Sam Long 71 and Jake Hibbert 72.

A thrilling final round saw Josh keep his cool and nerve in the sweltering heat with a second round of 74 taking him a shot clear of Nathan Danskin (Sandiway) and Sam Long. Crewe Golf Club’s seven handicappe­r Billy Wise also enjoyed a great day winning the best nett prize with rounds of 67 and 70, which included an eagle two on the 18th hole in round two – a feat matched by Ben Currie of Withington.

Also in the prizes presented by Cheshire president, Chris Moore CBE, were Kieran Underwood (Hartford GC) with the best nett of 67 in round two and Nathan Newton (Uptonby-Chester) with the best gross of 73 in round one.

Mr Moore gave deserving thanks to all at Delamere Forest GC for once more staging a fine championsh­ip.

He also presented a county plaque to Delamere Forest GC for their fine hosting of the competitio­n.

Macclesfie­ld ladies played for the President’s Prize and it was won by Nancy Barkworth with 35 points from Judy Mutter 34 and Jill Hunter-Blench 33. Another highlight was a fantastic eagle Two on the par four sixth hole.

Alderley Edge’s men played for the JC Brown Bowl and it was won by Carl Parnell with 39 points, one more than David Potts and Graham Sumner.

Edge’s ladies were in medal mode with Julia Ricketts leading in with 71 four less than Celia Berent and Olwen Davies.

A medal at Davenport was a close affair with Dave Stock winning a cpo on 67 from Dave Norrington, Christine Thwaites, Peter Burrow and Ken Perry.

Davenport ladies played their MDLGA Bunty Booth qualifier and in division one Marilyn Hurst was top of the shop with 39 points.

Margaret Ridyard topped division two after a cpo on 42 points with Sheila Elliott but division three had the top score of the day with 43 points posted by Olwen Sandiford. A singles Stableford at Mottram Hall produced some good scores led by Simon Corner with 43 points, one more than Josh Swann.

President’s Day at Shrigley Hall was won by Steve Henshall after a cpo on 68 with Steve Shanahan.

Rod Scott led in a Thursday Stabelford at Shrigley with 42 points from Ray Haddock 39.

The Alan Bethell Memorial medal at Styal was won by Jack Hazle with 66 taking him two clear of Steve Watson.

A Sunday Stableford at Styal was won by Dylan Bennett with 38 points, one more than Andrew Bennett and Colin Hazle.

Ken Mayoh went clickety click to win a Wednesday medal at Styal two less than Mike Burchell, Neil Brownhills and Peter Davies. Styal ladies were in double action with the latest round of the Summer Cup being topped by Sue Grange with 17 points from Hilary Boyce 16.

In a medal Pam Higgins led in with 72 two less than Hilary Boyce, Helen Billington and Enid Laverty.

England Golf support officer, Sean Hammill, showed his class in a BB Stableford at Prestbury partnering J Salem to a winning 46 points, three more than G Senior and L Townley.

Prestbury ladies were in a Pink team competitio­n led in by the fab four of P Smith, Nicky Markland, A Wood and A Atherton with 96 points, three clear of the field.

Prestbury Golf Club will be hosting the finals day of the MDLGA Bell Cup on Friday, September 7.

The competitio­n is the biggest of its kind in the country with an entry of over 80 clubs seeing their top seven players in the singles match-play format aiming to make the last four to compete on finals day.

Prestbury will host the finals day as the MDLGA President is Tricia Hunt from Prestbury.

Prestbury are the current holders of the Bell Cup but just missed out on finals day as they lost a dramatic quarter-final in the final match on the 19th hole in near darkness to Rochdale.

In the semi-finals Rochdale face Turton in the morning semi-final and the winners will play the winners of the other semi-final between Sale and Haydock Park in the afternoon final.

The Manchester Alliance has released their Winter programme details for which players from their 114 member clubs can enter throughout the winter.

The competitio­ns, which feature Order of Merit competitio­ns for profession­als and amateurs, are the biggest in the UK, and begin with the first competitio­n at Romiley Golf Club on Wednesday, September 5, and go on each week until

President’s Day (with a mid-winter break) at Bramhall Golf Club on Wednesday, May 1, 2019.
