School enjoys best ever year

POYNTON High School has hailed a ‘phenomenal’ year with its best ever year for GCSE results.

This year saw 237 students enter into the exams, with 88 per cent of them achieving a grade 4 or above in English, while 83 pc achieved the same in Maths.

And there were some stand out performers across the year, including Samantha Ford, who achieved an impressive eight Grade 9s.

Charlotte Davies, Megan Valentine, and Eve Gibbons was also top of her class with seven Grade 9s, closely followed by Anya Nevitt and Ewan Timms with six.

Among the hundreds of impressive results, Archie Cunningham was also picked out by the school as an ‘inspiratio­n’.

Despite having significan­t learning barriers in his way he managed to work hard and came out with seven GCSEs, including a Grade 4 in English Language and also surpassed grade prediction­s in five of his subjects.

Headteache­r David Waugh said he was over the moon with this year’s results and was incredibly proud of his students.

He said: “Simply put, I am in awe. I am honestly genuinely moved and in awe of just how well our students have done. Their results are so very well deserved and are a great reward for their unwavering dedication to their studies and their participat­ion in school life.

“My first day as Head- teacher of Poynton High was also this year group’s first day, five years ago now. Since that day, this group of young people have been truly inspiratio­nal in all that they have done. The Class of 2018 have risen to the challenge that we have set them every day … to jump in with both feet! I am truly humbled to see how well each and every one of them has achieved in their GCSE exams. I am particular­ly pleased to see their achievemen­ts across the whole curriculum, with English, mathematic­s and science achieving well over 80 per cent of all students gaining Grade 4 or above.”

Jonah and Oscar Cawley topped the charts among the school’s five sets of twins, as they came out with 21 GCSEs between them including five Grade 9s, five Grade 8s and seven Grade 7s.

Mr Waugh added: “Each set of twins have been a real credit to the school. Jonah and Oscar especially, have both triumphed despite the new ‘more academic’ changes to GCSEs. It’s true hard work and determinat­ion such as this which we love to celebrate here.” While Abi and Emily Moore were not far behind, achieving an impressive 20 GCSEs in a great range of subjects, including art, dance, history, and business studies.

Among variety of subjects taken by pupils at the school this year saw 90 pc gain a Grade 4 or more in GCSE PE, with 81 pc achieving Grade 4 or more in GCSE RE.
