Tourist trio shortlisted for top awards
Sutton Gamekeeper shortlisted among best in the country for its bird menu
SEVERAL of Macclesfield’s tourist gems have been shortlisted among some of the best in Cheshire.
Marketing Cheshire Annual Awards have released the hot spots named in each of this year’s different categories.
Among those nominated are Otters Retreat Holiday Cottage at Mellor Knowl Farm which is up for Self-catering property of the Year; Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre has been nominated for the THE Sutton Gamekeeper, near Macclesfield, has been nominated for another top award.
The rustic eatery, which specialises in locally sourced game, is shortlisted for the Eat Game Awards 2018, which highlight the pubs and restaurants which regularly serve game dishes on their menus
The Sutton pub recently won the coveted Countryside Alliance award for Best Pub in the North, before coming second and being highly commended in the National Pub of the Year contest.
James Kennedy, who runs the pub with his fiancée Jane Bradbury, shoots and catches the game that is served at the restaurant. He said: “Five or six years ago, people didn’t eat game regularly Sustainable Tourism Award, and Mottram Hall has been nominated for both Team of the Year and Hotel of the Year.
Ian and Angela Burns have been running Otters Retreat Holiday Cottages for the past three years.
Mr Burns told the Express it was nice to know their hard work was being recognised.
He said: “This is the first time we have been nominated for the award. We get a lot of great feedback from our guests, some of the messages are and many considered shooting animals to be cruel.
“Now it’s recognised that shooting plays a vital part in conservation and the sustainability of our indigenous wildlife. People also recognise that game is healthy meat being low in fat an cholesterol.”
He added: “We are located on the edge of Macclesfield Forest which means we have access to a sustainable supply of all types of game, including rabbit, venison and pheasant. Customers know where their food is coming from and because it is locally sourced, the carbon footprint is massively reduced.”

He added: “We are really looking forward to the event, it should be great. We have not been doing it long but we are really proud with what we have done.” The winners will be announced at a glittering ceremony at Cheshire’s Carden Park Hotel on Thursday, September 13.
