Watts wins through at Wilmslow

TOP junior golfers from across the region enjoyed a great day at the annual Wilmslow Junior Open, which doubles up as a qualifier for the Daily Telegraph Junior Championsh­ip.

The course, which had hosted the English Ladies Championsh­ips and the Cheshire Cat a few days previously, was in immaculate condition and the day was blessed with superb weather to provide a perfect stage for some excellent golf..

The top trophy was for the best nett score on the day and it was contested by two Styal juniors with 13-yearold Charlie Watts, a student at Holmes Chapel Comprehens­ive School, posting 68 to finish ahead of club colleague Daniel Lynch 69 and Alex James (Royal Lytham GC) 71.

It needed a cpo on 73 to see Bramhall’s Liam Mann take the best gross prize from Daniel Gibson (Sandiway) with Delamere Forest’s Sam Long a shot off the pace.

The best nett u15 was won by Niall Curwen (Bramhall GC) with 70 and Sophie Lee of Vicars Cross won the top girls nett prize.

Longest drive prizes were won by Kieran Underwood (Hartford), Adam Carr (Sale) and Wilmslow Junior Captain Katie Roberts.

A Saturday Stableford at Styal had division one led in by Peter Cordwell with 38 points from Jeffrey Chadwick 37 and Ged Stevens 36.

In division two Marco Ventisei led in with 36 points, two more than David Jones and Dennis Chester.

The familiar name of Steve James led in a Sunday Stableford with 42 points from Neil Roskell 40 and Ifti Ahmed 37.

Styal seniors played their ninth White Tee medal and it needed a cpo on 67 to take Neil Cowan into top spot from Steve Walker with Simon Edwards 68 and John Parr and Paul Jones also in the frame with 69.

Maureen Routley kept up her good form as Macclesfie­ld ladies played a singles Stableford.

She posted a superb score of 44 points to finish ahead of Chris Hickmott 41 and Kath Brocklehur­st 40.

Alderley Edge’s men played for the Challenge Cup and Mike Easton led in with 64 ahead of a pack of 66’s from Dan Feathersto­ne, John Roberts, Mike Troup and Duncan McPherson.

Edge’s ladies played for the Brenda Hendry Par and Yvonne Grundy was the only one to beat par with +1 seeing her home from Sue Kendrick, level par and Wendy Rule and Jo McGregor, both -2.

Davenport’s men played over two rounds for the Scratch Gold medal and in round one Steffan Sullivan set a hot pace with 71, four clear of Dave Waldron-Kelly and Ian Maxfield.

Round two was closer with Bradley Cooke, Neil Jenkinson and Steffan Sullivan locked on 74 with Staffan Sullivan claiming the Scrtach Gold medal with a total of 145 leaving him well clear of Neil Jenkinson 150 and Phil Housley 151.

It was tight at Mottram Hall in the latest round of the Challenge medal.

Dom Swindells led in with 70 and hot on his heels with 71 were Laurence Dews, Simon Truby, Peter Draper, Paul Dunford, Dan Edwards and William Murphy.

A Midweek Stableford at Prestbury was led in by young star Matthew Delany with 41 points from Elliott Kirton 38, Chris Adams 37 and John Kennerley 36.

Medal action for Prestbury ladies had Gill Mellor showing her county class with 72 from Myra Penkethman 73 and England star Bel Wardle 71-4=75.
