Students got to be in charge for a day after head ‘resigned’
TWO students at a Macclesfield school lived out every pupil’s dream when they were appointed headmaster and mistress for the day.
Head girl Siân Turner and head boy Luke Stevens, both 15 and in year 11, took the role at Beech Hall School, on Beech Hall Drive, Tytherington.
As part of the day actual headmaster James Allen staged a mock resignation at the start of school, which was broadcast via Facebook.
This paved the way for Siân and Luke to take over and become ‘Miss Turner’ and ‘Mr Stevens’.
They greeted parents, staff and pupils before presiding over assembly and a parent breakfast event.
The duo then oversaw a meeting to agree the purchase of accessible sports equipment for pupils with special needs and then held a discussion with Ian Percival, the school’s business manager.
Playground duty, menu planning and signing off the school newsletter were all also on the day’s agenda before they went back to being just regular pupils again.
Mr Allen said: “At Beech Hall we are keen to empower our pupils as much as possible, building confidence and developing key skills for their onwards journey, such as independence and decision making
“The initiative built upon this with both pupils doing admirably well throughout the day
“As head girl and head boy, Siân and Luke will get heavily involved in representing their counterparts by sitting alongside the Beech Hall staff to make key decisions on areas such as our charitable calendar for the academic year.
“This exercise gave them a valuable insight and confidence for the year ahead.”
Luke, who wants to work in the London corporate banking sector, added: “We had a great day, but were very busy. It was interesting to get involved in the school purchasing decisions and we even got to specify in the school kitchen that we would like to see more chicken curry!”
