Town is ready for an extra special Remembrance Day

- ALEX SCAPENS

AHOST of events will honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice as Macclesfield gets ready for an extra special Remembrance Day.

Sunday will mark 100 years since the Armistice was called and World War I came to an end.

The main event will take place in the town centre with a procession that leaves from outside the town hall at 10.30am and goes down Mill Street to the cenotaph at Park Green.

Here there will be a two minutes silence at 11am followed by wreath laying and a service of Remembrance.

The procession reforms to march back past the town hall, where the Mayor of Macclesfield, Councillor Adam Schofield will take the salute.

Coun Schofield said: “Remembrance and Armistice Day will be especially significant this year, not just because they fall on the same day, but because we are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the Great War.

“It would be fantastic if as many people as possible could attend as we pay tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives and to those who returned home broken, both physically and mentally, to protect our freedom.” DETAILS of other events in Macclesfield area:

BOLLINGTON - meet at the recreation ground car park 10am for parade to the memorial garden at 10.40am. A memorial service takes place before the parade returns at 11.30am.
